Workforce Improvement

VillageReach takes a holistic approach to health workforce development, from the community level all the way to national decision-makers. We build government capacity and develop leaders to improve health system efficiency, introduce innovation and sustain impact at scale. Our training and capacity-building programs expose health workers and managers to new approaches, systems and tools to improve health care delivery in remote settings. This includes new curricula and learning tools, task-shifting strategies, recruitment and retention strategies, eLearning tools, workforce deployment models, coaching/mentorship, peer-to-peer learning, and supportive supervision. Together, we break the ‘training cycle’ and promote sustainable, cost-efficient approaches.

Supply Chain Workforce Strengthening

Health systems are only as strong as the people working within them. VillageReach works with supply chain personnel and the health care workforce at national and local levels to ensure they have the training, resources and products they need for health care delivery. We collaborate with governments and partners to make sure the public health supply chain workforce is adequately staffed, skilled, motivated, and has a supportive working environment.

  • Emergency Operations Professionals
  • Supply Chain for Community Health Workers
  • Gender & Equity

The Pharmacy Assistants Program isn’t just about medicine, it’s about health outcomes.
By training local professionals, this program tackles medication shortages, frees up clinician time and improves patient care, all while building a stronger health care foundation for the future.

Public Health Emergency Operations Centers protect against future outbreaks. By professionalizing public health emergency response teams, they’re forging a stronger line of defense in remote areas. This program equips healthcare workers with the skills and knowledge to rapidly respond to crises and safeguard communities.

Supporting the front line to save lives By professionalizing CHWs in inventory management and data collection, SC4CHWs creates a more efficient system for life-saving supplies. This program ensures CHWs have the tools they need to reach the most remote patients, strengthening the health care ecosystem at its core.

We take a unique perspective to integrate equity and gender in all aspects of program design and implementation. This includes consideration for the gender of the national health workforce, program beneficiaries, community members, as well as our own internal teams implementing programs.

Supply Chain Leadership

Government leadership is crucial to create a sustainable local pipeline of adequately trained supply chain professionals. We ensure that governments lead in developing supply chain strategies and stewarding a holistically integrated supply chain, through initiatives such as the Strategic Training Executive Programme (STEP 2.0). This is a valuable partnership between experienced private sector supply chain coaches and public sector delegates, designed to improve health outcomes by building the supply chain capabilities of leaders and managers.

Supporting Community Health Workers

Imagine a world where everyone has access to essential health care. Community Health Workers (CHWs) are the backbone of this vision, serving as the closest link to health services for many in Africa. But CHWs need more than dedication – they need support. VillageReach collaborates with governments and communities to prioritize CHW needs, ensuring they have the vital tools and health commodities to keep their communities healthy. We advocate for CHW training, supervision and professionalization, because a well-supported CHW workforce is the key to achieving health care for all.

Our Expertise

  • CHWs & Immunization
  • Training and Supervision
  • Optimizing CHW Roles
  • Professionalization

CHWs contribute to significant improvements in VACCINE COVERAGE and REDUCED DROPOUT RATES. They are TRUSTED providers who can effectively support vaccine planning, outreach, administration, and follow-up when EQUIPPED with the right TOOLS, TRAINING and SUPERVISION. We are ELEVATING CHWs’ role in IMMUNIZATION SERVICE DELIVERY

Strong CHWs need strong support systems. We don’t just train CHWs in essential skills, but also focus on supervision. Guidance, mentorship and performance feedback empowers CHWs with confidence and fosters continuous improvement, ultimately leading to better patient care and a more robust community health system.

We equip CHWs with the skills to generate service demand within their communities, involving CHWs on communication strategies to raise awareness about critical health issues and empowering them to conduct research to identify pockets of need . With CHWs involved in demand generation, we create healthier populations.

We develop effective supervision structures, provide ongoing support, ensure a reliable supply chain for medical supplies and vaccines, and advocate for fair compensation for CHWs. We are working towards a future where CHWs are valued professionals, trusted to deliver high-quality care and improve health outcomes.

Beyond The Last Mile

Many still live beyond the reach of health services. To advance our goal of reducing inequity in access to quality health services, we must accelerate the pace of change by building an innovative health workforce that moves beyond the health facility. This includes taking a gender-informed approach to workforce and advocating for female leaders. Women comprise nearly 70% of the global health care workforce but are under-represented in leadership and earn 27% on average less than men.

Community Health Workers are the boots on the ground, working in villages, providing services and collecting patient feedback that informs change. Through the Community Health Impact Coalition (CHIC), we advocate for a world where skilled, salaried, supervized and supplied CHWs are the norm. We lead national CHW coalitions in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi and Mozambique, strengthening local health care by building strong CHW networks.
