At the 2024 Health Innovation Conference held in Kampala, Uganda, I had the privilege of engaging with some of the most forward-thinking minds in global health. As a panel speaker, I participated in discussions that explored the future of health care innovation in the Global South.
Held from August 26-27, 2024, the conference centered on “Integrating and Scaling Innovations into Healthcare Programs and Systems”. It brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, all committed to advancing health care.
Conference Highlights
The conference kicked off with a series of powerful keynote addresses that set the stage for the 2-day discussions. This was followed by high-level panel sessions, interactive workshops, abstracts and focused presentations, breakout sessions and exhibitions that explored various aspects of health care innovation, from policy and financing to the role of digital tools in enhancing health equity.
Day 1
The first day centered on the theme ‘Sustainable Innovations for Healthcare Systems,’ featuring panel discussions, enlightening abstract presentation sessions and interactive workshops. I was honored to join an esteemed panel of peers to discuss how cutting-edge technologies, strategies and innovations can be harnessed to enhance health care delivery, improve patient outcomes and drive the global health agenda.
The conversation was rich, with diverse perspectives on the practicalities, challenges and opportunities of implementing innovative solutions in various health care settings, focusing on scalability, sustainability and equity. As someone involved in global health, I found the discussions both inspiring and practical, offering concrete steps we can take to ensure that no one is left behind.
Day 2
Day two shifted focus to ‘Scaling Innovations and Building Collaborations.’ My colleague Dr. Bannet Ndyanabangi and I participated as speakers in two-panel discussions that discussed (i) innovative strategies that enhance the resilience of healthcare systems and (ii) practical strategies and frameworks that ensure that health innovations (whether new technologies, treatments, or practices) are distributed equitably across different socioeconomic, geographic, and demographic groups.
We shared insights on VillageReach’s collaboration with governments, partners and communities to build resilient and responsive primary health care systems that equitably deliver health information, essential health products and services to the most underreached in the community. Our fellow panelists ̶ from government, private sector, implementing partners and academia ̶ also shared their experiences and lessons learned, collectively contributing to insightfully rich conversations on resilient, inclusive and equitable health systems.

Key Takeaways
(i). Cross-Sectoral Collaboration is Crucial:
The conference underscored the importance of partnerships between governments, private sector players, NGOs and academia. These collaborations are essential for creating an ecosystem that fosters innovation and ensures that health care innovations are sustainable and scalable.
(ii). Equitable Access Must Be a Priority
A recurring theme was the need to design health innovations with inclusivity at their core. This means ensuring that innovations reach the most vulnerable populations, particularly in low-resource settings, to bridge the gap in health disparities.
(iii). Policy Support is Non-Negotiable
The discussions highlighted that even the most groundbreaking innovations can falter without supportive policies. It is crucial to have regulatory frameworks that facilitate adopting and scaling new technologies in healthcare.
(iv). Sustainability Requires Innovative Financing
Securing sustainable financing for health innovations remains a significant challenge. The conference explored new financing models, including impact investing and public-private partnerships, as key strategies to ensure that health innovations continue to thrive beyond initial funding phases.
(v). Digital Tools are Game Changers
From telehealth to AI, digital tools were recognized as transformative in expanding access to health care. However, their success depends on thoughtful implementation that considers the digital infrastructure and literacy levels in different regions.
Looking Forward
As always, the icing was the opportunity to reconnect with and learn from friends and peers and develop new partnerships. The incredibly creative minds that continuously seek to design solutions to critical health care challenges were on display, providing a powerful reminder of the need to tap into and invest in locally-driven but globally-connected innovations. Moving forward, the insights and connections gained from this conference will be invaluable in informing and driving the collective effort needed to transform health care systems globally.
